Make an ad Competition : And make it snappy By David Gapes A smart print ad from G2’s Mari Pettersson is the clear winner of our 2007 competition. Her simple execution, using a Getty image, pushes all the right buttons – it has immediate impact, it’s funny, the words work beautifully with the image, and – best of all – the ad effortlessly conveys the clear message that at Sylvia Park megamall you can buy anything. Actually, Pettersson has been among the winners of this competition for the past three years, picking up =2nd last year to go with the 2nd and 3rd she won in 2005. Second place this year went to freelancers Vijay Appu & Chris Hillary for their quirky Mercedes ad. [We’ll overlook the crap spelling! – Ed] Third was Michael Tam of Espy Design with a Bunnings Warehouse ad. Highly commended were Matthias May (Espy), Appu & Hillary, Tam, and Cinderella’s Phoebe. Pettersson wins a Panasonic Lumix camera + $150 cash, Appu’s & Hillary’s prize is $100 cash. All three winners also get a 12-month AdMedia & Fastline sub (for themselves or as a gift), plus the 2007 edition of AdMedia’s Agencies & Clients book (with online access), and Onfilm’s Data Book directory (also with online access). The winners should email david@admedia.co.nz to claim their prizes. The ads were created using images supplied by Photolibrary.co.nz, FocusNewZealand.com, Canvass.co.nz, Stock Central/Age (stockcentral.co.nz), Carobimages.com, PhotoNewZealand.com, and Gettyimages.com. In all, a record 50 entries were received. The judges were ed David Gapes & designer Kylie Sterne, aided and abetted by swarms of 3media designers and writers (Pettersson’s ad was the choice of every single one).
