Letters : Racist & sexist!

Magazine cover

Dear Ed:
I just got my copy of the September AdMedia. Good work as usual and I particularly enjoyed the tribute to Peter Spencer.
The disappointment, however, was the cover, which I found to be overtly racist and sexist. The inclusion of a Gingerbread Man on the cover stereotypes the industry’s fixation on males and is demeaning to women.
Why not a Gingerbread Woman? It is difficult enough for women in advertising without having Gingerbread Men flaunted in such a distasteful manner.
On the racist front the whole concept of a Gingerbread Man is obviously a thinly veiled dig at redheads. Gingers have enough problems without being singled out unfairly in this way.
While I thoroughly enjoy AdMedia it appears obvious that some serious thought needs to go into your choice of covers for future editions.
